Organizing Articles with Categories and Folders
Categories and folders help organize Knowledge Base articles into a structure that readers can understand and navigate.
Categories
Categories represent major subject areas.
Use categories for broad topics that should be visible as part of the Knowledge Base information architecture.
Folders
Folders can provide an additional organizational level within a category when the category contains multiple related groups of content.
Choosing the right location
Place an article where a reader would naturally expect to find it.
Avoid creating multiple categories with nearly identical purposes.
Moving an article
When an article must move to another category or its public path changes, consider whether existing links need a redirect.
Preserving old public URLs prevents bookmarks and external references from breaking.
Naming
Use short, descriptive category and folder names.
Avoid internal abbreviations unless the intended audience already understands them.
Good practices
Review the structure as the Knowledge Base grows. A small number of clear categories is usually easier to navigate than a large number of overlapping categories.
