Security Best Practices for Administrators

Security Best Practices for Administrators

Helpdesk administrators have elevated responsibility for protecting system configuration and customer data.

Apply least privilege

Grant administrative permissions only where required.

Protect secrets

Keep credentials, API keys, encryption keys, and service passwords outside public source code and user-visible diagnostic pages.

Review access

Regularly review:

  • administrators
  • roles
  • team membership
  • inactive accounts
  • integrations
  • service credentials

Make controlled changes

Back up important configuration before risky changes and test after deployment.

Monitor public boundaries

Public routes must not expose stack traces, SQL errors, credentials, internal paths, or protected records.

Maintain auditability

Use individual accounts and preserve meaningful activity history.

Good practices

Treat security as an ongoing operational process rather than a one-time setup. Review security when architecture, integrations, staffing, or business processes change.
